Diabetes - recently diagnosed?

I have just been diagnosed as a diabetic. My blood sugar levels are very high and I feel tired, hungry and very thirsty. When I eat I feel sick and get headaches. I have to wait for an appointment with the diabetic clinic and I donít know what to do while I wait. Is there any way that I can help myself in the meantime?

You do not indicate if you are on insulin or not. If you are then your situation requires speedy attention. Most hospitals have special diabetic day care clinics where patients can be seen speedily and usually on a drop in basis. If you are not on insulin and are awaiting a first outpatient appointment it would be appropriate to return to your GP for further assessment. Since you are a newly diagnosed diabetic the website of the Diabetes Federation of Ireland should be of interest to you:
