Medical Q&As

Pregnancy - sun beds safe?

Can you take sun bed treatments during pregnancy?

I think you will find that the majority of doctors are very wary about sun beds irrespective of whether the person is pregnant or not. Sun beds produce their effects by emitting ultraviolet radiation, which affects the pigment producing cells or melanocytes to produce melanin. Melanin is the pigment in the skin that produces the effect that we refer to as tanning. While not wishing to engage in scare mongering it is not possible to give medical approval to a process that involves exposing the body to radiation.
