I need the tetanus vaccine for travelling to Egypt but cannot obtain it from any pharmacy in order for my doctor to give it to me. What should I do?
Most GPs carry a small stock of tetanus vaccine in their surgeries because it is administered quite frequently in general practice. If you have not already done so check with your GP to see if he has it in stock. If he does not have any tetanus vaccine in his surgery he would be in a position to give you a prescription in order to obtain it from your local pharmacy. A pharmacist will not dispense a vaccine unless he is presented with a prescription. This mechanism of issuing a prescription is used quite routinely for various injections that might not be part of the usual supply of injectable drugs or vaccines that the GP keeps in stock in his surgery.
