Smear test - how often?

How often should one get a smear test?

The current guidelines from the Department of Health are that smear testing should commence at 25 years of age. A second test should be performed one year after and further follow up tests should be repeated every five years up to the age of 60. The screening interval may be shortened in an individual case depending on the result of the last smear. In some cases a minor abnormality might be detected, which may necessitate repeating the test in 6 months or a year depending on the degree of abnormality. Assuming the test results are normal testing every five years should be more than adequate.
