Medical Q&As

Morning after pill - where do I get it?

Can you get the morning after pill without having to go to the doctor?

The answer is no but this is a situation that may change in the future. A new pill has been licensed recently in the U.K. that is available over the counter without needing a doctor’s prescription. The Irish Medicines Board refused a licence for that product however that decision is likely to be revisited. At present the doctor normally gives the morning after pill directly to the patient when it is requested. Most GPs keep a supply of pills in the consulting room for this purpose. Despite common perception the pill is widely available in GP surgeries around the country. It is also available at family planning clinics.
