Fianna Fail TD admits drink driving

[Posted: Thu 25/09/2003]

By Deborah Condon

A Fianna Fail TD has admitted that he was over the drink drive limit when he was involved in a recent traffic accident, in which a pedestrian was injured.

Dublin North TD, G V Wright, was returning home from the Dail on September 18 when the accident occurred in the Mountjoy Square area. A subsequent breath test revealed that he was over the limit.

In a statement, Mr Wright said that the incident 'was a serious lapse of personal responsibility on his part'.

He apologised unreservedly to the pedestrian who received leg injuries, as well as to his friends, family and constituents.

Gardai have not yet made a decision on whether to press charges against Mr Wright.

Mr Wright should receive the same penalties that an "ordinary" citizen would receive. I can't comprehend that Politicians are offered immunity within certain mileage of the Dail. Its about time that these forms of immunity are repealed. Maybe, the Health Minister should start clamping down on the effects of Alcohol and the wider community.

Why have Gardai "not yet made a decision"? Mr Wright was over the limit and ran over a pedestrian. This doesn't require highly developed decision-making skills.
