REVEALED: Fluoridation Forum finding

[Posted: Fri 25/01/2002]

Exclusive

The State should continue the practise of adding fluoride to the public water supply in the interests of dental health, the Report of the Forum on Fluoridation, due to go to the Health Minister shortly, has concluded, irishhealth.com can reveal.

The Forum was set up by the Minister in May 2000 to examine the contentious issue of fluoridation. Opponents of fluoridation are concerned about 'mass medication', fluorosis (damage to the enamel of the teeth), dental caries (crumbling of the teeth) and other health risks they claim are linked to fluoridation.

Around three quarters of the population in Ireland receive fluoridated water, however some county councils here have petitioned the government to be allowed not to add fluoride to the water in their areas.

The last meeting of the Forum took place in November and the recommendations have just been finalised. The report also proposes continuing research into the issue.

The Forum heard from many experts, some international dental experts, who argued that the benefits of fluoridation no longer outweighed the debits caused by fluorosis and other possible health risks.

However, other experts argued that the dental health of residents of fluoridated communities is considerably better than that of residents living in non-fluoridated communities and that research proves the effectiveness and safety of the process.

A study conducted in Dublin presented to the Forum compared the city with Glasgow, where the water is not fluoridated. It was claimed that there was a difference of 45% in the level of dental caries between the two cities, indicating there was much more dental decay in the non-fluoridated city.

Another factor contributing to the increase in dental caries highlighted in the Forum report is the frequent consumption of foods and drinks, sweetened with sugar, especially by children.

The 19 member Forum is chaired by the former president of University College Galway, Prof Pat Fottrell. The report will shortly go to the Health Minister for consideration and publication.

It should come as no surprise that the predominantly \'Pro-Fluoride\' Forum has declared water fluoridation to be both safe and effective, and recommends its continuation in Ireland. However, what is surely disheartening is the fact that selective information is now being used to convince the Irish public that water fluoridation is effective in reducing dental decay. The editorial above recounts the presentation to the Forum which detailed a study (Blinkhorn et al 1992) comparing \'Fluoridated\' Dublin with \'Unfluoridated\' Glasgow. The fact that Fluoridated Dublin had 45% less dental decay than Unfluoridated Glasgow was presented as conclusive evidence that water fluoridation works, and therefore Ireland should continue adding 2000 gallons of fluoride to the drinking water supply daily. The Dept of Health\'s Chief Dental Officer presented the same \'conclusive\' findings to an Oireachtas Committee on Health in July 2000. Seems convincing? Well what both presentations have failed to highlight is the fact that this study was extended in 1994 (Downer et al 1994), taking in both UNFLUORIDATED Edinburgh and London (two cities which offer a better social class fit comparison to Dublin than the more socially deprived Glasgow - social deprivation has a high correlation with dental decay). And guess what, both of these cities had LESS dental decay than FLUORIDATED Dublin. In addition, there was a higher percentage of children in London and Edinburgh WITHOUT ANY dental decay at all, compared to Dublin. Lower dental decay without water fluoridation!! Now if in the eyes of the Forum the 1992 Dublin/ Glasgow study represents strong enough evidence to continue this fluoridation farce, then surely the more relevant 1994 study should provide sufficient evidence that water fluoridation has NO EFFECT in reducing dental decay, and Ireland should halt this practice immediately. I feel that the Forum on Fluoridation hasn\'t been about uncovering the truth, or critically assessing the evidence. The Forum is quite aware of this 1994 study, but may really not be too keen on you knowing about it. Keep drinking the water folks!!! When the US Food and Drug Administration require a poison warning on all fluoride toothpaste we should hear the alarm bells. When 98% of Europe has either banned, stopped or never tried dosing their population with chemical fluoride we should see the red lights. And when a Minister of Health sets up a Forum of largely pro-fluoride indivuduals what can you expect. Now we know why Fluoride is called the Protected Pollutant.

What can I do to help rid of flouride in the water?

Our family uses a stone filter which filters out a huge number of harmful chemicals. It sits on the bench and is easily accessed even by kids. They price at around 70 Euro and the filter is good for six months. Contact your Health Food Store for availabilty.

Can anyone explain why the so called pro-fluoridationists want fluoride to be put in water? How do they benefit from it?

It appears to be a combination of arrogant pride [I can't possibly be wrong about teeth!] and pure fear. If the practice is found to be unhealthful and that people have been harmed, then plaintiff's lawyers will appear as magically as sprouts in spring!

Fluoride is TOXIC!!!

Following these results, Dr. Dean Burk, the Chief Chemist Emeritus of the U.S. National Cancer Institute, stated: “In point of fact, fluoride causes more human cancer death, and causes it faster, than any other chemical”.6Dr. Perry Cohn of the New Jersey Department of Health discovered an epidemiological correlation between osteosarcoma (one of the principal cancers of childhood) and fluoridation.7

The health damage linked to fluoride includes dental fluorosis, hip fractures, irritable bowel syndrome, cancer, neurological damage, thyroid dysfunction, decreased fertility and allergic response.

WATER IS GOOD FOR US FLUORIDE IS NOT!!
