Ban all TV alcohol advertising says FG

[Posted: Wed 14/02/2001]

There has been a call this evening for the banning of all television advertising of alcohol and the sponsorship of sporting events by companies, which make alcoholic drinks.

Fine Gael's spokesperson on health, Gay Mitchell was responding to the launch of the Department of Health's National Alcohol Awareness Campaign today.

"This government is sending conflicting messages to the public. On the one hand, it has recently extended pub drinking hours and on the other hand it is launching an expensive awareness campaign on the dangers of alcohol consumption", he said.

He was particularly critical of the sponsorship of sporting events by alcohol companies and in particular the sponsorship of hurling by the Guinness brewery.

Research to be published next week will show Ireland has moved to the top of the European league when it comes to young people drinking alcohol.

I think it would be a shame to see the end of alcohol ads on TV as some of the best viewing is the ads! Also the drink ads are usually among the best ads - with the exception of the current Guinness campaign of course!

Exploiting the vunerable is an ill way of selling a product. To save the future of this country there has to be a ban. It's our choice but also the goverment - they govern our country, they have the greater influence and should use their power to prohibit underage drinkers.

it seems advertising is to blame for pretty much everything these days - can't people take responsibility for themselves and their actions. there's far too much of the granny state mentality in all this for my liking

FG are very naive to think There would be such a thing as a Ban on Advertising Alcohol? The advertising business in Ireland is worth millions to the exchequer, as is the sale of alcohol. I do not believe such a ban would ever be allowed in Ireland. The Vinters Society would not be in favour. What should happen is alcohol should not be advertised in such a "cool" way. And remember how advertising works... So if the Government are serios, why not show adds showing: Broken marriages, abuse, violence al due to alcohol, and belive me that would not be allowed. How many Drink companies in fairness sponsor events in Ireland (another form of advertising). If FG are serious why not put a warning label on the cans and bottles "Alcohol can damage your health/life.
