Cannabis doubles fatal crash risk
[Posted: Sun 04/12/2005]
Driving under the influence of cannabis almost doubles the risk of a fatal road crash, according to a new study.
However, its share in fatal crashes is significantly lower than those involving alcohol.

The French study involved 10,748 drivers who were involved in fatal crashes from October 2001 to September 2003.
All drivers underwent compulsory tests for drugs and alcohol.
A total of 681 drivers tested positive for cannabis and 2,096 for alcohol, including 285 for both.
Men were more often involved in crashes than women and were also more often positive for both cannabis and alcohol, as were the youngest drivers, according to the study.
It was found that the risk of being responsible for a fatal crash increased as the blood concentration of cannabis increased.
The results give credence to a causal relationship between cannabis and car crashes, according to the authors.
The research is published in the British Medical Journal.

| Ladies and Gentlemen: The problem is that this study conflicts with half a dozen other studies conducted since 1990 in the Netherlands, in the Netherlands sponsored jointly by the usa and the Dutch governments, in Australia and in the UK. And I love this last line. "The results give credence to a causal relationship between cannabis and car crashes, according to the authors." My question is, and so should your reporting have included, "how, exactly does this give credence to ...," especially in light of the 6 other conflcting studies? Remember this research comes from France which is a staunchly prohibitionist country whose current goverment "has it in," for cannabis. Just google up Chirac + cannabis and you will see that studies from FRANCE, SWEDEN, THE UN AND THE USA all have to be taken with a grain of salt, as politics supercedes science in the irrational discussion of cannabis with prohibitionists and prohibition oriented governments. These countries and the UN have and will continue to lie about cannabis in every way they can, using demagogic rhetoric to impune cannabis, its users and its non-opponents in any way they can, usually using jail as a way to shut people up, both figuratively and literally. Until the proper reporting is done that compares this study with the 6 conflicting studies since 1990, Irishhealth.com has -not- done its proper and due dilligence in reporting on this subject. Could there be some editorializing going on with the publication of this study without referencing 6 others which have contradictory findings? Eric Johnson Nijenburg 72 Amsterdam +3120 707 4930 |

| my wife got a clean sheet in her driving test the tester said she could be a tester only problem was she was after a joint. it did not work for me because i got 2 minor marks on my sheet. having said that i am sure there are people out there that if they smoked a joint and went driving they could cause murder and mayhem. |
| I dont fancy reading such long winding posts. Id just like to say that as someone who smoked two joints on seperate occasions in her youth & who no longer indulges, getting stoned & driving do not go together. One cannot possibly be in their right senses after a joint & therefore cannot drive a car. It should be up there in the same category as drink driving. |

| Fifi wrote, "I dont fancy reading such long winding posts..." which means, ultimately, " I don't care what the evidence says, my opinion based on my (admittedly extremely limited experience) has to govern, or the world will fall apart. This is a good summation of the position of most opponents of cannabis. "Damn the evidence, we are talking about cannabis here. Our irrational emotions trump your long, winding, evidence filled, position when it comes to cannabis. Period. No discussion. Don't even show me the facts. Just stop talking, OK? Typical cannabis foe. Eric Johnson |

| Eric, simplistic as it may be - drugs are bad! No argument can determine otherwise. You are obviously a user therefore fighting for the cause. I thank my lucky stars I have had "limited experience". My common sense must have kicked in there somewhere. |
| And after The Fifi-type post generally comes a person to question my motivation in seeing that a one-sided story receives balance it was due in this case, however heinous that crime is. But wait," drug are bad," mmkay, and a proclamation that," no argument can say otherwise," truly shows the insolence from which many people base their irrational, baseless, factless attacks on cannabis. Attacks with foundations against cannabis -can- be made, weak though they will all turn out to be, but cannabis foes don't even try to use fact, only half-truths and innuendo... Is your position so vapid, so utterly worthless that you have to question my credibilty as a human being by casting me as a drug user from the outset, intimating that you, somehow, occupy the moral high ground on the issue? How did you occupy this moral high ground? As far as the innate danger of the drugs goes, the heirarchy of danger is topped by methamphatamine, followed by tobacco, alcohol, cocaine, heroin, LSD, XTC, psilocybin mushrooms, caffeine and then cannabis. Alcohol is the only drug, by the way, proven to cause crime as one of its prmary effects. You may have your limited experience, but it seems tohave shed little or no light on drugs, drug laws, drug aw reform, or pharmacology of the drugs. Nor does it seem to understand why facts and not proclamations are necessary in political arguments. Why should your opinion carry weight if it has no basis you are willing to provide other than an attack on my character disguised as an argument? Eric "Eric, simplistic as it may be - drugs are bad! No argument can determine otherwise. You are obviously a user therefore fighting for the cause. I thank my lucky stars I have had "limited experience". My common sense must have kicked in there somewhere. |

| Eric, keep your knickers on.I always thought hash usage was supposed to chill you? Did you run out? My opinion is yes, drugs are bad mmkay? Anyone with a shred of common sense will tell you that. Even though I myself never succumbed to the drug temptation, I knew / know plenty of people who did. Most of them are complete wasters. I dont mean that in a vindictive way but most of them dont work or if they do, have menial jobs. They seem to have no ambition in life. They have no hobbies other than being down at the pub - sports and alcohol free socialising is a no-no. Lets face it, how can you honestly tell people you can function normally on a day to day basis when you are stoned out of your head? No one other than your fellow users will go against that statement Im sure. |

| See what I mean, fifi? You seem to claim some sort of divine right to be pandered to by governments. In the USA There are 750,000 annual arrests for cannabis infractions, with 680, 000 of them being for possession only. Each year for the past 10 years. And cannabis use is stable. Screw the violent crime, we have pot smokers to harrass. Is this what you think society is for, to ban people from consuming plants on penalty of prison and, usually following a conviction and prison/jail sentence in the usa, loss of job, loss of drivers license, loss of children to the social services (way to go!), and loss of any federally controlled housing, not only for you but for anyone related to you anywhere in the USA living in public housing regardless of their contact with you or knowledge of your habits, and loss of eligibility for college loans? Simply for smoking pot? Is this healthy for anyone, pot smoker, cop, you, children, the society? Is this what you advocate, GW Bush's America is -the- place for you. Places like Alabama, and Virginia and Texas and Idaho especially good places for people harboring this kind of abject, baseless, irrational hatred for some people's habits. Enforcement is intense and penalties are tough. Eric Johnson |

| I dont believe people should go to prison for having or smoking the stuff. Thats crazy. They shouldnt even go to court. All Im saying is that the stuff recks your head, your thinking, your basic functioning. I cant understand why someone would like to subject themselves to that kind of lifestyle. |

| Fifi, your addmission that you don't much like reading explains everything. Thank you. |
| Thanks Eric. Sharp, intelligent posts on cannabis are always good to read. The system in The Nederlands is the envy of thinking people throughout Europe. Out politicians, on the other hand, are barely literate. Thanks again. |
| fifi says the same on other posts cannabis obviously does not sit right with her and she thinks it affects everyone the same as herself she has not had one valid point on any other thread like this she just says its bad after smoking 2 joints when she was younger i hardly think that this would qualify as someone i would listen to for facts. i have smoked and driven for years a 600cc motorbike for 8 years and a car now for 4 i have never had a crash. |
| I'd say, in fifi's defence, she doesn't sound like an out-and-out prohibitionist. Thank you. |
| She says she opposes all the bad things about prohibition, but it is unyielding, irrational attitudes like this which keep the politicians in perpetual fight-or-flight response more when cannabis is the issue. The result...the situation in the US, UK, Sweden, France and soon (again) Australia. So Fifi and the "I don't care what the facts are, my opinion must rule," crowd are culpable in the establshment and continuance of prohibition. Thus she -is- a prohibitionist. Eric Johnson |
| Semantics aside, Eric, fifi's anti-cannabis sentiments are mild compared with some I've seen on other cannabis forums on this site. One in particular called for the "eradication of ALL drugs from the face of the earth". How cerebral is that? Thank you. |
