Painkillers may increase miscarriage risk - study
[Posted: Fri 15/08/2003 - www.irishhealth.com]
By Deborah Condon
Women who take certain painkillers during pregnancy, including aspirin, may be at an increased risk of suffering a miscarriage, the results of a new study indicate.
However taking paracetamol during pregnancy is safe, the study also found.
Researchers interviewed 1,055 pregnant women immediately after their pregnancy was confirmed. The women were asked about their reproductive history and their drug use since they became pregnant. They were also asked whether they had any known or potential risk factors for miscarriage.
The study found that use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) during pregnancy, increased the risk of miscarriage by 80%. This risk was even higher when NSAIDs were taken around the time of conception or were used for longer than a week.
NSAIDs are any one of a large group of drugs used for pain relief. They include aspirin and ibuprofen. They work by suppressing the production of prostaglandins, fatty acids which can lead to inflammation. However prostaglandins are also needed for successful implantation of an embryo in the womb.
The researchers believe that because NSAIDs act on the whole body, they could lead to abnormal implantation of the embryo, resulting in a miscarriage.
Paracetamol on the other hand, only works on the central nervous system, which may explain why it has no effect on the risk of miscarriage.
The results support the findings of similar studies however confirmation is needed, the American researchers said.
"Meanwhile it may be prudent for physicians and women who are planning to be pregnant, to be aware of the potential risk and avoid using NSAIDs around conception", they added.
Details of this study are published in the 'British Medical Journal'.

| Could anyone tell me the effect of the frequesnt use of dental aneastetic while in the early stages of pregnancy |
|
|
| hi couild you tell me is khapake painkelers safeto take in pregancy,i am 5 weeks.khapake is a tablet with 500mg paracetamol and 30 mg codeine,i am worried it might harm the baby, thank you |
|
|
| You can safely use dental aneasthetic for any dental treatment you require during pregnancy. In fact, it is important to take care of your dental needs through-out pregnancy as the pregnancy itself can exercerbate dental problems as it is a strain on calcium and vitamin D absorbtion |

| Is it safe to take cold remedy like Beecham's in the first trimester? |
|
|
| A cold remedy usually only contains paracetamol, Vit C and caffeine. Far better in my opinion to take somethign mild like that in the early stages of infection that to let it get worse and then have the danger of possibly having to expose your baby to antibiotics or steroids in order to clear up a more serious infection. It is important, if you can, to stear clear of anti-histamines as their action breaks down mucus |

| I have had 3 miscarriages in a row and have done the testing associated and everything seems normal. We are waiting only for the DNA testing. My husband takes 10 to 18 tylenol number 1 pain killers a day ( most of the time) for his back pain. I am wondering whether his sperm has been damages enough while he continues to take this painkiller and affects my pregnancy. I have always miscarried at about 9 - 10 week period. Could anyone advice on the pain killer issue and my husband's sperm potential damage. thank you |
|
|
| I had understood that this related only to woman takign painkillers in pregnancy, but if your husband needs and entire packet of pinkillers to get him thru the day, every day then i belive he needs to get treatment for his back - urgently. |
