New lung cancer link to asthma
[Posted: Thu 03/01/2002]
by Deborah Condon
People with asthma appear to be more likely to develop lung cancer, the results of a major study involving over 100,000 patients indicate.
While previous studies have focused on the health history of cancer patients, this study instead kept track of people after they had been diagnosed with asthma.
Researchers in Sweden used national health registers, allowing them to monitor more than 100,000 patients' medical history over a 30-year period.

The dust mite is also linked to cases of asthma.
They found that lung cancer occurred more frequently in asthmatics, compared to the general population. Altogether over 700 people developed cancer, exceeding the anticipated level by almost 60%.
The scientists do not know if asthma causes the increased risk, however they have not ruled out the idea that a common factor could be responsible for causing both cancer and asthma. They also believe that external factors, such as smoking, may also play a role.
An estimated 274,000 people in Ireland have asthma, according to the Asthma Society of Ireland.
The results of this study can be found in the 'European Respiratory Journal'.

| As an asthma patient I think that not smoking and taking allergies and asthma seriously, removing the allergin if possible and treating the condition correctly are the best ways of avoiding related diseases, maybe even reducing the cancer risk? |
| Can Inhalers cause lungcancer in asthmatics |
| Has anyone investigated the possibility that the increased cases of Cancer could be due to the medicines administered directly into the lungs via inhalers ? |
| Interesting connection between inhalers and lung cancer made by two members. I wonder if it simply means that cancer targets the weakest body part, which in asthmatics is obviously the lungs? Is the incidence of cancer in general, i.e. other sites, greater in asthmatics than in the normal population? |
| has it been investigated yet whether there is a link between asthma and cancer through some fault of an inactive immune system? |
| Bravo hex I think you have just fond the weakest link in the chain |
| assuming that wasnt sarcastic it does seem logical to think that cancer, which is really just a mutation leading to excessive cell growth, would be more prevalent in areas that experienced frequent damage, say in the asthma patient who might be more sensitive and cough more or whose asthma attack might trigger something in the way of chemicals used for healing. it has also been suggested that anti-oxidants are the cause, or was it the lack of them? curse my aging memory. |
| sarcasim wasn't intended depite the mispelling chemicals used for healing are unlikely to be harmful. An oxzidant would be oxygen plus another component which in some cases causes rust " touch of sarcasim" there are a lot of cancer triggering factors including U.V.asbestos,radiation, smoking etc and some diseases which are not kept under control Personaly as an asthmatic since I was a baby unttil now, middle age I don't think this is one of them I would be much more concerend of the detremental effect of poor managment of this distressing disease |

Hi, last April I burried my dad with lung cancer and three years before that I burried my mam with the same type of cancer. Two weeks after my dad died I was diagnosed with a tumor in my right lung and my doc told me he was 96% sure it was cancer and he could cure me. After about one week I was sent for a bronchoscopy, after two weeks I was called back to the doc in question and he told me it was not cancer. then five days after that I was called back again and he told me that I had emphasima which probably lead to lung cancer in the future. At this stage I dont know what to believe, if it was misdiagnosed and I have lung cancer time is running out. Especially with both parents died with the same thing LUNG CANCER. Boy |
