Put smokers at bottom of waiting list - poll

[Posted: Sun 30/12/2001 - www.irishhealth.com]

by Fergal Bowers

Over one in five Irish people believe that those who continue to smoke should be put at the bottom of the waiting list for lung cancer treatment, according to the results of a new poll by irishhealth.com.

Also, nearly one in ten take the view that smokers should pay more for healthcare.

We asked our 29,700 plus registered site users: should doctors put people who continue to smoke at the bottom of the queue for lung cancer care?

Of those who voted, 38% said that smokers should be helped to quit; 30% disagreed with smokers being given the lowest priority for treatment, while another 23% said that these patients should be put at the bottom of the waiting list.

A further 9% said that smokers should pay more for healthcare.

as smoking is one of the main causes of lung cancer thats the same as putting heavy drinkers at the bottom of the waiting list for liver disease treatment.

I believe that smokers should get equal treatment, otherwise let the non smokers of this country pay prsi and not the smokers.

apart from the inequality of such a proposal, smokers contribute more to the tax take than non-smokers

Why don't the govt. put a full stop on advertising cigarettes & ban smoking on TV programmes & films (which portray smoking as cool & relaxing!). Surely this would be a better step to take rather than shoving smokers to the bottom of hospital waiting lists. WHY NOT? - think of the revenue the govt. would lose if every one in the country quit smoking!!!!

If the anti-smoking fraternity of this country are think that a person who smokes should be asked to pay more for health care and at the same time be on the bottom of hospital waiting lists, then is not fair to say that any person who does not smoke should be excluded from opinion polls that concern people who do smoke!! What would be said then, "We have the right to an opinion"!! We have, We will, We should, Consider this!! There was a time when you only got what you were entitled to if you were the right gender or colour. ""HOW SOON IT ALL FORGOTTEN""

So lets get this straight? Some people believe that they are entitled to a better service than others purely because they do not approve of their lifestyle? Why not? But while we're at it, lets put people who drink down ther, or non nationals, after all, its our health service! A biggoted idea, but no more so than the idea for leaving smokers in the gutter!
