Concern over lack of new mental health staff

Politicians have been urged to act to provide comprehensive community mental health services to people throughout the country.

Concern has been expressed that the promised extra staff for community mental health teams have yet to be appointed.

Mental Health Reform, which aims to promote improved mental health services, urged TDs as the Dail broke up for the summer recess to check the plan for community mental health services in their own area.

It said TDs should ensure that the promised new mental health staff to be provided under €35 million allocated to mental health service expansion this year are in place by September.

Mental Health Reform has pointed out that 414 additional staff were to be appointed to community mental health terams this year, but no staff had yet been hired.
