An obesity specialist has warned we are fattening out children for a future of poor physical and mental health.
Prof Donal O'Shea of St Vincent's and St Columcille's Hospitals in Dublin said from treating adult obesity over the years, it has become clear to him that prevention of obesity is the only way forward.
Addessing Crumlin Hospital's 55th Foundation Day conference at Farmleigh House in Dublin, Prof O'Shea said we need a responsible society that promotes lifelong weight awareness and where healthty options are made easy.
Minister for Children Frances Fitzgerald told the conference that rising levels of obesity generally, and specifically childhood obesity represent one of the most serious public health challenges facing this country.
She said her department was planning specific initiatives on childhood obesity, particularly in the areas of play and recreation.
