'The pill' may prevent blindness

New Irish research has found that the contraceptive pill could have a role in preventing sight loss.

Research carried out by scientists at UCC and TCD has indicated that a commonly-prescribed pill, Norgestrel, could prevent the death of cells in the eye that detect light.

The study indicated that the contraceptive pill may strengthen the cells involved in this process, thereby preserving sight.

However, as studies to date have been carried out in mice, further research will be carried out to see if the cell-preserving action of the pill can be reproduced in humans.

The research is published in the Journal of Neurochemistry.
