Fetal scanning error report due out
[Posted: Mon 18/04/2011 www.irishhealth.com]
The long-awaited report of the HSE review into miscarriage misdiagnoses is to be published this afternoon.
The review was prompted after it emerged in the media last summer that a number of women were wrongly informed their babies were dead in their womb following fetal scanning. The babies were saved after the mothers insisted on a second opinion.
As revealed in irishhealth.com earlier this month, a total of 24 cases of miscarriage misdiagnosis had been brought to the attention of the review.
A total of 32 cases were initially identified by hospitals to the review process, of which 24 were deemed to meet the review's inclusion criteria.
The review report will focus on deficits in hospital practices, staffing and facilities which led to the errors.
