TDs warned on health cuts protests

A Government Minister has claimed TDs involved in local bargaining to save their own seats risk doing damage to the country.

Speaking on RTE's The Week in Politics programme last night, European Affairs Minister Dick Roche said everyone wants to survive in politics but the nation must come first.

Over the weekend, a second TD indicated  withdrawal of support for the Government over local concerns about cuts and reconfiguration of health services.

South Tipperary TD Mattie McGrath said his continued support would depend on the retention of acute services at South Tipperary General Hospital in Clonmel.

Deputy McGrath claimed discussions on reconfiguring hospital services in the south-east were going on behind closed doors without any local political input.

On Friday, Independent Galway West TD Noel Grealish withdrew his support for the Government over health cuts  in the west.

He attended a rally in Galway on Saturday protesting against health cuts.

The protest, attended by around 350 people, was organised by the Galway No to Health Cuts Campaign. The event was supported by members of SIPTU and Impact, the Labour Party and the Socialist Workers Party.
