New codeine sale restrictions

[Posted: Tue 03/08/2010 by Niall Hunter, Editor www.irishhealth.com]

From today all pharmacists must comply with new guidelines on the safe supply of codeine medicines.

The guidelines stress that codeine medicines must not be directly accessible to the public on shelves and most be stored in an area of the pharmacy under the pharmacist's direct management and supervision and out of sight to the public.

The rules also state that patients should be facilitated and encouraged in obtaining medical assistance for any health problems related to codeine misuse.

According to the regulatory body, the Pharmaceutical Society of Ireland (PSI), members of the public who need advice about pain management or feel they may be experiencing side effects or other problems from their use of painkillers containing codeine should seek the advice and assistance of their pharmacist.

Kate O'Flaherty of the PSI says a pharmacist should conduct the consultation with any patient seeking advice about codeine medicines, and who should make the professional judgement and decision as to what is the most appropriate treatment or advice for the patient.

"This may be what painkiller or other medicine is most suitable, which will in be a codeine medicine, or it may be whether the patient needs referral to a GP other healthcare professional or if there is any other specific advice or information that they require."

this is typical big brother crap,

treating us all like children,

who the  f,,, do they think they are by telling us what and what not we can buy over the counter, if you cant get it over the counter , then they are ways that people will get it , like anything else , under the counter.

If you are using codeine products legitimately, you have no reason to worry about not being able to buy it.

I have seen first hand the devastation that can be caused by codeine addiction.

It will be up to the pharmacist to use their own common sense to try to weed out those who are misusing or abusing codeine, and to try to inform people of the correct dosage.

Codeine is a potent drug and if the pharma industry was seeking approval for it today, it almost certainly would HAVE to be prescription anyway.

Why must people start harping on about big brothers and nanny states whenever new legislation irks them?

Strange! now that the patent is up on the famous soluble paracetamol and codeine brand name Solpadene.  Some other manufacturer was able to produce the same product Maxilife at a cheaper price.  Then out of the blue warnings are put out about these painkillers.  Is that a coincidence or is there something more to it, me thinks there may be!!!!

Holly the reason warnings were put out is because these analgesics are potentially habit forming and long term use CAN lead to damage.

Buzz you are missing the point totally.  I pointed out that another drugs

company have manufactured the same product now that the patent has

expired on Solpadene, Maxilief  AND Booth Chemists in the U.K. have also

got it for sale under Booths own brand.  I for one know why warnings are

put out and I wouldn't insult any of the other readers by suggesting

otherwise.  Please read my comments carefully before replying.

Holly perhaps you could actually STATE your opinion rather than filling your post with supposition and smoke, and expecting others to know what in the world you are banging on about.
