Some brains resist antidepressants
[Posted: Sun 17/01/2010 www.irishhealth.com]
Some depressed patients should not be treated with antidepressants as their brains resist the drugs, new research has indicated. This is due to the way antidepressants work on some patients The research claims that instead of raising levels of serotonin in some patients, antidepressants can actually lowers levels of this chemical in their brain. Usually, these drugs raise the levels of serotonin and this helps depression. The researchers, from the US and France believe the findings will help identify patients in whom antidepressants may not work. The findings may also lead to more effective therapies for these patients. The findings were published in the journal Neuron. View irishhealth.com's Depression Clinic here
