Most people positive about benefits of research

[Posted: Sun 29/11/2009 by Olivia Fens]

A new study has found that almost 80% of Irish people believe clinical research is positive for healthcare, society and the economy.

However, the Irish Platform for Patients’ Organisations, Science and Industry (IPPOSI) study found that almost six in 10 people are unwilling to participate themselves.

Only half the population understands what clinical research is, the study found, and it is this confusion that causes fear of participation.

Additionally, fear of the unknown and the perceived risk of harmful side-effects appeared to be the key barriers to participating in clinical research.

“Our study has been very encouraging as it shows people support the need for clinical research and when they understand what is involved they are also more willing to participate,” Eibhlin Mulroe, CEO of IPPOSI said.

“The priority is to inform the public about what clinical research means and how they can participate throughout their lives. We want the Irish public to understand that clinical research drives development of new and advanced medical treatments which can be life changing for patients with unmet medical needs.”

The report was launched this week at the National Strategic Forum on Clinical Research at Farmleigh House in Phoenix Park, Dublin.
