Heart death sparks Ennis concerns
[Posted: Mon 20/04/2009 www.irishhealth.com]
The HSE has been asked to investigate the death of a man who suffered a cardiac arrest in an ambulance after having to bypass the newly-closed emergency department at Ennis General Hospital early yesterday morning.
The 59-year-old man suffered a cardiac arrest in an ambulance minutes away from the A&E at Limerick Regional Hospital and was declared dead shortly after reaching the A&E.
His wife said his life might have been saved if the A&E unit at Ennis was open at the time and she paid tribute to the emergency personnel.
The incident has fuelled local concern about the safety implications of closing the Ennis A&E.
The HSE said emergency staff worked on the patient while in the ambulance while travelling to Limerick and the advance paramedics provided him with the same treatment he would have received at Ennis.

How, in God's name, could an advanced paramedic administer the same level of care in a speeding ambulance as the patient would have received in a hospital setting like Ennis? They will try to spin themselves out of any situation and they will hold an enquiry by themselves on themselves and no one will be to blame and there will be a clear reason why the journey to Limerick did not influence the outcome and some people will believe it. |

systems error !! spinners on overtime these days within the HSE. Why don`t they just retrain some of the HSE management in the PR sector, save a fortune !! |

This incident proves what those of us, who have supported small hospitals all along, have claimed. More lives will be lost by the foolhardy decisions of the HSE. Does the Government not realise that it is storing up serious litigation claims down the line? |
