Govt slammed on CF unit

[Posted: Fri 27/03/2009 www.irishhealth.com]

Fine Gael has criticised the Government for not delivering on the provision of isolation facilities for cystic fibrosis (CF) patients at Dublin's St Vincent's Hospital.

The HSE has confirmed that funding for constructing a unit at the hospital that would have 30 single rooms for CF sufferers will not be available for another two years at least.

Fine Gael health spokesman Dr James Reilly said the lack of appropriate CF beds exposes patients to cross-infection and shortens their lives, which are already tragically brief.

"It is absolutely indefensible that we are still forcing these patients into overcrowded wards that place them literally in mortal danger," Dr Reilly said.

He said it had been confirmed that not only had the new 30-bed unit been delayed, but eight of 14 single rooms promised as interim solution while the unit was being built have not been delivered.

Dr Reilly called on the Government to get the HSE to install a temporary facility at St Vincent's and when the permanent unit is completed, this facility could be relocated to another region that needs isolation beds.

Hello all,

I listened with disbelief to Joe Duffy's 'liveline' this date. The programme focused (yet again) on this latest scandal regarding the lack of isolation units for CF sufferers.

There was a wonderfully articulate young lady on the prog ....I think her name is Orlagh Tinsley (forgive the spelling)....who is suffering as I write. My God....if any/all of you could download that podcast it would bring you to tears. It should also make all who hear it apoplectic with rage!

Just this week another young CF victim has lost their fight for life....and the promised extra iso units are again put on the back-burner!!

I want RTE/TV3 and absolutely all radio stations and papers to demand a response from the HSE/Ministers responsible and the Taoiseach himself as to why these young people are being handed a death sentence from the govt.

I also want them to ask HSE/Ministers/politicians/Bankers etc consider why they consider they are worth their huge bloated bonuses while young, vibrant, brilliant, lovely people like Orlagh Tinsley and her friends should suffer untimely deaths....for want of a clean toilet and dignity.

I've given up demanding their shame....as, by now....we realise they have none...but it's time the media put pressure on them....spend less time on the 'fashion mags' etc etc....THERE WILL BE MORE YOUNG PEOPLE DEAD SOON IF NOTHING IS DONE NOW!!
