Doctors at Beaumont hospital in Dublin have served strike notice on management.
The Irish Medical Organisation (IMO) said today it was giving management two weeks notice that industrial action would take place.
Non-consultant hospital doctors (NCHDs) at the hospital are unhappy about restrictions on overtime they are to be paid for periods in excess of 10 hours. Locum cover is also an issue.
Beaumont says it is not in breach of any agreements on the matters.
Fintan Hourihan of the IMO said that up to 200 doctors could be involved. The union balloted on taking action, and 98% of those who voted were in favour, he said.
Dr Hourihan said details of what form the action would take have yet to be finalised.
“We will give them [Beaumont management] a week’s notice as to the form of the action and the emergency cover needed,” he said.
Earlier this month Beaumont told the doctors that it had to restrict overtime because of the spiralling bill. Overtime costs went up by €200,000 in September, to €1.1 million a month, and Beaumont says there has not been an equivalent increase in ‘patient activity’.
