Contact lens solution recalled

[Posted: Fri 01/06/2007 - www.irishhealth.com]

A popular contact lens solution has been recalled by its manufacturer.

The brand name of the recalled product is Complete Moisture Plus.

Moisture Plus, which is made by US company Advanced Medical Optics (AMO), has been recalled because of problems with eye infections.

AMO says there is no suggestion of product contamination in Complete Moisture Plus, but is taking the steps immediately for safety.

Moisture Plus is sold in Ireland, and AMO has offices here, in Dublin and Westport, Co Mayo.

A release from AMO said the US Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) had shown company representatives data from interviews with 46 patients who had developed Acanthamoeba keratitis (AK) infections since January 2005.

Acanthamoeba is bacteria found in soil, sewage and air-conditioning systems.

The CDC estimates the normal rate of AK infection at one to two cases per million contact-lens wearers.

Symptoms of the infection include eye redness, soreness and sensitivity to light.

AMO says it is taking a conservative approach to protect customers.
