Over 200,000 people in Ireland have diabetes , however 50% of these are unaware that they have the condition, according to the Diabetes Federation of Ireland (DFI).
In an effort to raise awareness of the condition, a dedicated diabetes helpline and website has been set up by the DFI.
The helpline provides callers with general information on diabetes and other related conditions, including cardiovascular disease. Statistics show that around 80% of people with diabetes are likely to die of cardiovascular disease, according to the DFI.
The diabetes website offers a number of resources, including the latest news and information relating to the condition and a calendar of events organised by the DFI.
The helpline number is 1850 909 909 and it operates from 9 - 5, Monday to Friday. The website address is http://www.diabetes.ie
