The Alzheimer Society of Ireland is a national voluntary organisation. It was established in 1982 by a small group of people who found themselves in the position of caring for a family member with Alzheimer’s Disease with no information or support available to them.

The Society grew steadily and today, there is an extensive national network of branches and services to provide people with all forms of dementia, their families and carers with the necessary support to improve their quality of life. The Society is now the major dementia-specific service provider in Ireland with over 300 volunteers, 500 staff and 2,600 members.

The Society’s support services currently comprise 29 branches, a national network of day care centre, home care/support service, carer support groups and one residential respite centre.

A number of core functions are operated from the Alzheimer Society’s National Office in Dun Laoghaire including information, fund raising, public relations, training, finance and research. The Society also operates the Alzheimer National Helpline 1800 341 341 offering information and emotional support.

The Alzheimer Society of Ireland’s mission is: To work for and on behalf of people with Alzheimer’s Disease and related dementias and their carers to ensure they have the necessary supports and services to enable them to maximise quality of life, respecting the needs, rights and dignity of the individual.
